June 29 - OPP Warn of Scam Surfacing in Area

FROM/DE: Upper Ottawa Valley OPP               DATE: June 29, 2017

(PEMBROKE, ON) – The Upper Ottawa Valley Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to warn residents of a scam that has recently surfaced in the area.  The scam is often referred to as the “Fake CEO” scam.  It typically begins with fraudsters gaining access to a high-ranking  executives email account or creating a similar email address of the president or person in charge of an organization.  The scammer then sends a realistic looking email requesting urgent wire transfers, for what appears to be legitimate business reasons, to those within the organization who have the authority to move money.  Believing that the request is real, the employee transfers the money only to later find out that the email was a scam and the money is gone.

The following tips are suggested to help avoid falling victim to the Fake CEO scam:

  • Establish a standard process that requires multiple approvals for money transfers
  • Take a careful look at the senders email address.  It may be very similar to the real one, with only one or two letters different.
  • Double-check with executives when they send wire transfer requests by email, even when they look legitimate.  Don’t use the contact information provided in the message and don’t reply to the email.
  • Ensure your computer systems are secure, keep antivirus software up to date, and encourage all employees to use strong passwords to protect their email accounts from hackers.
  • Limit the amount of employee information available online and on social media. Fraudsters use it to find potential victims and time their targeted fraud.
