(PETAWAWA, ON) – Upper Ottawa Valley Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Auxiliary Constable Ernie Lafrance will be stepping down at the end of June 2018 after nearly 16 years of dedicated service to the community as a member of the OPP’s Auxiliary Program.  After retiring from a 32 year career in education he enlisted in the OPP’s Auxiliary Program in November of 2002.  Aux. Cst. Lafrance quickly became a respected and very active member in the unit and at times was among the provincial leaders in volunteer hours dedicated to the Auxiliary Program as a result of his work at the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP Detachment.

In addition to accompanying regular uniform members on general patrol duties he regularly took part in All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) and Motorized Snow Vehicle (MSV) patrols throughout the detachment area.  Aux. Cst. Lafrance was also trained in the Safeguard Program to assist victims of break and enter to better protect and safeguard their property.  He also took part in crime prevention initiatives such as the Lock It or Lose It campaigns to help reduce victimization amongst local citizens.  He proudly represented the OPP at countless community events including bicycle safety rodeos, school fun nights, parades, home shows and stuff the cruiser food drives.  He would also shuttle officers assigned to northern deployments to the airport, often in the early morning hours. 

Detachment Commander Stephan Neufeld stated, “Aux. Cst. Lafrance was an extremely dedicated and well-respected member of the OPP’s Auxiliary Program.  Ernie was known as the go-to guy and represented the OPP with pride throughout his lengthy career as an Auxiliary Officer.  His dedication to the OPP’s Auxiliary Program and the communities in our detachment area cannot be overstated.”
