Job Opportunity - Student GIS/Asset Management Technician

The Township of Laurentian Valley is hiring one GIS/Asset Management Technician Student for approximately 16 weeks starting May 11, 2020.  The position is 35 hours per week (Monday to Friday).
  • Utilizing and modifying databases and associated forms as well as data manipulation
  • Use of GPS equipment and ArcGIS software to accurately locate and map various assets and utilities in the Township.
  • Assist in compiling information from a variety of sources such as spread sheets, scanned documents, maps, engineering/architectural drawings and other data sources that will be used to update the asset management inventory.
  • Participate in Public Works employee related activities such as safety training and other job related training as assigned.
  • Provides and maintains a high degree of confidentiality and security of information at all times.
  • Work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and other applicable legislation, department policies/procedures/practices, operational guidelines, and perform safe work practices.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned in accordance with department and corporate objectives.
  • University/college student who has successfully completed at least the first year in a GIS/Engineering program or Planning or Geography Program.
  • Proficient in the use of computers and computer software including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, ArcGIS and web browsers.  Understanding of Asset Management related software would be an asset.
  • Knowledge and/or previous use of GPS devices would be considered an asset.
  • Ability to read and interpret maps and engineering/architectural drawings.
  • Able to work independently.
  • Physically capable of performing assigned duties.
  • May be subject to inclement weather and/or weather extremes during the discharge of responsibilities.
  • Considerable periods of standing and/or moderate walking in the field may be required.
Considerable periods of sitting and computer usage may be required.
  • Valid Class G Driver’s Licence is required
  • Must provide personal CSA approved safety boots/footwear
To be eligible you must have been registered as a full-time student during the preceding academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis during the next academic year.
