Information for Candidates

Offices for Nominations

Beginning January 2, 2014 nominations will be accepted at the Township of Laurentian Valley for the offices of:

Mayor - 1 position to be elected at large
Reeve - 1 position to be elected at large
Councillor - 5 positions to be elected at large

School Board Trustee Elections:

Trustee for Renfrew County District School Board (English Public) – 1 position elected at large

  • Area: Township of Laurentian Valley & Township of North Algona  Wilberforce

Trustee for Renfrew County Catholic District School Board (English Catholic) – 1 position elected at large

  • Area: Township of Laurentian Valley, Township of Admaston/Bromley, Township of North Algona Wilberforce & the Township of Bonnechere Valley

Eligibility

To run for the position of Mayor, Reeve or Councillor, you must be:

  • A Canadian citizen
  • At least 18 years of age
  • A resident of the Township of Laurentian Valley, or the owner or tenant of property in the Township of Laurentian Valley (or the spouse of an owner or tenant)
  • Eligible to vote in Laurentian Valley
  • Not disqualified to hold office by any legislation

To run for the position of school board trustee, you must be:

  • A Canadian citizen
  • At least 18 years of age
  • A resident in the school board’s area of jurisdiction
  • Eligible to vote for the school board
  • Not disqualified to hold office by any legislation

Nomination

Beginning January 2, 2014 nomination forms will be available and will be accepted by completing and filing, in the Office of the Clerk, on the prescribed nomination form and accompanied by the nomination filing fee of:

Head of Council – $200.00
All other positions – $100.00

The filing fee is payable by debit, cash, and certified cheque/money order.  The candidate must provide proof of qualifying address within the Township of Laurentian Valley.

The nomination form must be signed by the candidate and may be filed in person or by an agent with the Clerk at:

Withdrawal of Nomination

A candidate who wishes to withdraw his or her nomination must notify the Clerk in writing before 2 p.m., Friday, September 12, 2014. The candidate must file his or her withdrawal or statement in person and may be required to provide identification.

The candidate will still be required to submit a financial statement (due no later than March 27, 2015 at 2 p.m.) covering all financial transactions up to the time of the withdrawal.
