Old Electronics Accepted Year Round -OVWRC

Laurentian Valley, ON (September 3rd, 2014) – An old radio, a broken TV and a VCR; most of us have at least one of these lying around.  The Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery Centre accepts electronic waste which is shipped off-site for recycling or proper disposal. There is no charge to drop items off.

“Our electronics waste depot is open year round to residents and businesses.” States Sue McCrae, General Manager of the Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery Centre.   “Already in 2014 the Centre has received over 50 tonnes of electronic waste at our depot.  This is an important program when it comes to diverting waste from our landfill.”

The Centre accepts electronic waste year round at its’ drop-off depot at 1076 Woito Station Road, adjacent to the Centre’s main operations.   This program has been in place since 2009.   It was expanded in 2010 and included a ban on electronic waste being collected during the Spring and Fall Bulky Item Pick-Ups in Petawawa, Pembroke, and Laurentian Valley.

“Since opportunities exist for residents to properly recycle electronic waste it is not currently collected curbside.”  States Mark Behm, Public Works Manager at the Township of Laurentian Valley.  “We still tend to see items like TV’s and computer monitors set-out for collection.  They can be brought to the OVWRC for proper disposal.”

To operate this program, the Waste Recovery Centre receives funding from Ontario Electronic Stewardship (OES).  OES collects fees from brand owners, first importers into Ontario and assemblers of the products that are accepted as part of the electronic waste program. Funds are used to pay for program costs including collection, transportation, and processing.

Electronic Waste received at the Centre is shipped to licensed processing facilities for recycling. Mrs. McCrae states that “OES ensures facilities are processing material in an environmentally safe manner and that components which can be recycled are.”

For the operating hours of the Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery Centre please refer to their website.   Businesses dropping off 10 or more items at one time are asked to notify the Centre 24 hours in advance.  There is no fee to drop accepted electronic waste off at the Centre.   For more information and a detailed list of acceptable items please visit www.ovwrc.com
